About

Enoch Cree Nation

The Cree name for Enoch is maskêkosihk (pronounced Muss-Kay-Go-Sik) and translates as “people of the land of medicine“. We aim to ensure that our people’s voices are being heard and breaking the silence that colonization has held over our people since the settlers came to our land we now call Canada.

Our Tradition

Enoch Cree Nation is reviving Cree culture through its Maskêkosak Culture Program and Cree language initiatives.

Our Success

Enoch Cree Nation believes that a strong economy leads a stronger Nation, and its efforts to promote the economic interests of the Nation have effectively brought it closer to its goal of self-sufficiency.

Mission

We, the Enoch Cree Nation, proud member of Treaty 6, actively seek to preserve and promote our culture, language, history, and spirituality while advancing our economic, education, health, and social well-being of our people.

A PROUD SOVEREIGN NATION

ENOCH CREE NATION is 20 square miles located just west of, and adjacent to, the City of Edmonton, on Highway 60. Enoch Cree Nation entered into Treaty on September 25, 1877 and is proud member of the Confederacy of Treaty Six.

Our people descend from The Plains Cree and are now 2,566+ band members strong. We are connected to this land, and strive to be stewards of Okimaw askiy, mother earth. We are a vibrant community, connected with our culture through our language, stories, songs, dance and ceremony.

In September 1889 Enoch Cree Nation (the Stony Plain IR #135) was established. Originally 44.5 square miles, in 1902 and 1908 our ancestors were forced to sell and wrongfully surrender portions of our lands to the North and east sides, reducing us to 20.5 square miles today.

As signatories of Treaty six, a nation – to nation agreement with the Crown, we protect our Treaty rights and inherent human rights, with the self determination right to choose our own government structure and the right to direct our social, spiritual and economic advancement of our peoples.
