Job Purpose
The Addiction Counsellor works within a multi-disciplinary team to provide culturally appropriate crisis intervention, assessment, prevention, referral and follow-up services for Enoch Cree Nation. By weaving together Western medicine and traditional wellness practices, the addictions counsellor plays a pivotal role in supporting individuals who are experiencing significant addiction and mental health-related difficulties to navigate the complex challenges they face. By facilitating a safe and supportive environment, the addiction counsellor will develop personalized treatment plans using a variety of trauma-informed modalities that empower individuals to explore their addictive processes and build healthy coping strategies that support recovery. Services and supports will be extended to include family or other support networks as requested, while engaging individuals and the community through individual/group counselling, psycho-educational programming, and workshop interventions to reduce the stigma surrounding all areas of addiction and mental health-related issues. Close collaboration with other health and support services will be built and maintained in our collective effort to deliver a comprehensive, end-to-end continuum of Indigenous addiction and mental health services.Education, Experience and Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in addiction, social work, psychology, or psych nursing. An equivalent combination of education, training & experience may be considered. Minimum 2 years
- experience in mental health service delivery, preferably in a First Nations community or with Indigenous people.
- Experience working within the perimeters of the Alberta Mental Health Act
- Additional experience, training and/or certification in therapeutic modalities specific to addiction counselling, including equine therapy, land-based teaching, etc.
- Current practicing registration with the applicable professional governing body in Alberta.
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License (class 5 and/or class 2)
- Satisfactory Child Intervention and Criminal Records Check
- Conducts intakes, completes case histories and formulates assessments with individuals and their families to inform their care plan and therapeutic goals
- Approaches to healing include person-centred, strength-based, trauma-informed approach, with focus on aftercare, individual, group and family counselling.
- Provision of direct clinical care and risk assessment to individuals with mild to moderate mental health challenges through individual and group interventions.
- De-escalating the acuity of a crisis incident and supporting individual(s) who are experiencing more significant mental health challenges, particularly in relation to substance use, and facilitating access to healing/recovery programs as needed.
- Collaborating and supporting successful transitions to addiction recovery services by providing information and referral to other community service providers, resources and professionals as required.
- Attend team meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences and clinical supervision as required to support organized, coordinated, and integrated care.
- Liaise with formal and informal care organizations to determine existing support(s), developing, implementing, and monitoring collaborative wellness plans in consultation with clients and caregivers, encouraging optimal client self-determination.
- Attends related education programs and workshops to maintain a high standard of knowledge and respond to client needs.
- Maintains accurate program documentation and confidential files as per agency and accreditation standards/requirements.
- Provides monthly reports to the Wellness Manager on departmental progress
- Participates actively as an Enoch representative in collaborative care networks and participates in Enoch community activities, including traditional ceremonies and cultural events.
Working Conditions
- The Addiction Counsellor is required to work a total of 40 hours per week: Monday to Friday, 830 – 430 (with a one-hour paid lunch break); flexibility to work evenings/weekends as needed.
- Primary location: Wellness Department, with occasional travel to various sites.
- Must sign and adhere to the Enoch Cree Nation Confidentiality Agreement upon hire.
- While adhering to the Enoch Cree Nation Human Resources Policy & Procedures Manual.
