To our Enoch Cree Nation Members:
Access to housing across the Nation remains a top priority for Chief and Council and the Housing Department. They recently shared the following statistics:
- More than 10% of the Nation’s housing inventory has been impacted from drug use inside the homes and properties. The estimated cost to fix these damaged and drug contaminated homes and properties is very substantial. When taking into consideration repairs both past, present, and future, the financial impact is multi-millions of dollars.
- These costs reduce the Nation’s ability to invest in housing supports for the more than 400 families currently on the waiting list for housing.
Considering these costs, balanced with the need to address housing requirements for the Nation, Chief and Council have issued the attached notice, effective immediately. This decision is supported by Nation Residency Bylaw section 7.1b, which states that residency may be revoked if an offence occurs that is deemed detrimental to the best interests of Enoch Cree Nation.
The protection, the needs, and the security of all Nation members sometimes means that tough decisions need to be made. Enoch Cree Nation supports and programs for members and families affected by substance abuse is and will be available to help those in need. Reach out for help, your Nation is here to support you. We must work together to protect the Nation from the harms of drug use. When we work together as a community, we strengthen our Nation and uphold the responsibility to care for the land, the homes, and the people of maskekosihk.
