Job Purpose

oskayak kotawân in an organization dedicated to maintaining the safety, care and general well-being of the oskayak that we serve. Oskayak Kotawân provides a balanced safe home to youth that supports the growth of spirit, body, mind and emotions through maskêkosihk nêhiyawêwin. The Child & Youth counsellor will provide a wide range of services with an emphasis on developing therapeutic relationships with children, youth, and their families. The Holistic Child & Youth Counsellor works as a member of an interdisciplinary team, and within the organization’s framework and standards as well as cultural standards within Maskekosak Cree Nation in order to provide triage, screening/assessment, urgent clinical response, short-term psychotherapeutic/stabilization services, exploration of community resources and client needs. The holistic child & youth counselor acknowledges that the human spirit is intricately involved in the healing of the total person—mind, body, soul and spirit and will work with the client and the program to ensure that the holistic child is nurtured. The Holistic Child and Youth Care Counsellor will provide direct client care including individual and environmental assessment, intervention planning, individual, family, and group counselling, and referrals to other important service providers and agencies within the community. You will work collaboratively with other community services including school teams, teachers, social workers, nurses, physicians, RCMP, Victim Services, and local Indigenous and Non-Government Organizations to provide a comprehensive, person, and family centered approach to care while using best practices within your work.

Education, Experience and Requirements

•Have a clear Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check.
•Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behavior and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques.
•Broad knowledge of other helping disciplines and their role in client care.
•A strong ability to foster good public relations.
•Demonstrated judgment, good observation and client assessment skills, tact and empathy.
•Comprehensive knowledge of developmental theories, narrative therapy, family dynamics, treatment and behavior management modalities.
•Demonstrates a Team Work relationship with supervisors, co-workers and clientele.
•Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promote communication and lead to a co-operative approach to problem solving within an interdisciplinary setting.
•Demonstrated and proven good interpersonal skills, including crisis intervention, stabilization, de-escalation and brief
•A good understanding of serious psychiatric disorders, including those first diagnosed inchildhood/adolescence.
•Willingness to partake in Maskêkosak traditional and cultural practices as well as willingnessto learn Cree language.
•Diploma in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, or other Human Services related field.Preference will be given to applicants with experience in Counselling, Psychology or HumanServices field from an accredited university and registered with a professional licensingbody.
•2 years (recent) direct youth work experience; experience in family support work, groupfacilitation and/or advocacy is an asset.
•Two (2) years’ recent related experience in areas requiring youth crisis intervention and riskassessment.
•Experience working with Indigenous populations and youth.
•Understanding of mental health and alcohol and drug addiction issues.
•Understanding and training in suicide/homicide risk assessments, psychiatric and addictionstreatment methodologies, crisis intervention and response techniques and strategies, thechange process, and community dynamics.
•Knowledge of available programs and services, their interrelationships, and their function indelivering care in the community.
•Knowledge of applicable legislation, such as the Mental Health Act and Child Protectionlegislation.

Working Conditions

The Children & Youth Counsellor will work in an office environment and is required to work standard office hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, located in the Oskayak Kotawân House of Enoch Cree Nation. However, the incumbent must be willing and able to flex their schedule if or when there are program and/or service changes; or if there is an emergency. Will be required to work some evenings and weekends. While adhering to the Enoch Cree Nation Human Resources Policy & Procedure Manual.
